There are different explanations for this tradition:
The first explanation we have goes back to the year 1882. At that time the bourgeois class (in France) used to drink champagne and eat grapes during New Year's Eve dinner.
A group of people in Madrid decided to make this tradition ironic by going to the "Puerta del Sol", to eat grapes accompanied by the sound of chimes.
The second theory goes back to 1909. That year there was a very good harvest of grapes, and the producers decided to give more output to the product selling it as "lucky grapes".
Today the tradition of the 12 grapes has been polished. There are many people who say that the grapes symbolize abundance and good luck in the 12 months.
