¿Qué es?
Es un pequeño fuerte con un recinto central heptagonal que disponía de diversas piezas de artillería para detener el posible avance enemigo. Se creó a partir de un gran foso con una galería de contraescarpa excavada en la roca. Desde el recinto superior se puede disfrutar de una vista excepcional de la zona histórica del puerto de Mahón, sin duda uno de los más deseados en el Mediterráneo occidental por las potencias de la época.
¿Dónde está situado y cómo llegar?
Está situado en la zona sur del puerto de Mahón, concretamente en la cala de san Esteban (Es Castell). La cala de sant esteve se encuentra a 5km de Maó y a 2km d'es Castell, se puede llegar en coche o a pie, no hay transporte público.
Historia:
El Fuerte de Marlborough, construido por los ingleses en la primera ocupación entre 1710 y 1726. Debe su nombre a Sir John Churchill, duque de Marlborough. Éste era el general británico más destacado de la época. Está construido en la bocana del puerto de Mahón y en esa época su principal función era proteger la entrada del puerto de los franceses y de los españoles. En 1756 las tropas francesas comandadas por el duque de Richelieu arrebataron la isla a los británicos y se quedaron durante 7 años y en 1781 el duque Crillón al frente de las tropas españolas conquistó la isla devolviéndola a la soberanía española. En el siglo XVIII Menorca volvió a estar bajo el dominio de los británicos y se configuró el fuerte como hoy en día lo apreciamos y se construyó la torre de’n Penjat que se une al fuerte por un camino de piedra evitando así el asentamiento de las tropas enemigas.
Visitas y horarios:
La primera parte de la visita se lleva a cabo en las galerías subterráneas, donde una serie de dispositivos sonoros y visuales ayudan en gran parte a la imaginación.
Después de un recorrido por el foso, se llega a la
parte superior, desde donde se puede ver la zona histórica del Puerto de Mahón.

¿What is it?

scarp excavated in the rock. At the top enclosure it is possible to enjoy an exceptional sight of the historical zone of the port of Mahón, undoubtedly one of most wished in the western Mediterranean for the powers of the epoch.

The first part of the visit is carried out in the underground galleries, where a series of sonorous and visual devices help largely to the imagination. After a tour for the pit, it comes near to the top part, from where it is possible to see the historical zone of the Port of Brick.
